Intrigue in the Night Air

This is a painting by HD*.

It was a learning exercise - out of one of those 'Teach Yourself to Paint' books. And, as is the case with these exercises, it doesn't look much like the original. The original was in pastels, and this was done in acrylics. I prefer this version by far (no offence to the original).

In fact, I adore it. (Yes, I realise I may be biased).

But I find this painting incredibly evocative. It instantly transports me to a rainy night in some European city, rainy streets glossy in the street lights, people sheltered within their apartments, and the deep silence broken by the sudden roar of a speeding, unmarked car...

It could be a scene in a Tintin adventure, or from a movie like Ronin. One day, it will feature in my long list of yet-to-be-written stories.

I have appropriated this painting in the past and decorated my work area with it.In the words of one colleague with obviously excellent taste, it is smashing!

Mad as a Hatter

In honour of the Melbourne Cup in Australia today, where a horse race also means frocks, fascinators and assorted fancy fashions, this is a delightful little hat that belongs to my friend, T.

If it looks instantly familiar to you, yes, it is actually meant to be The Mad Hatter's hat,

Elephants Hanging Around

These are my quirky little elephants who always find a home in my work space.

I find they help me project that important blend of professionalism, intelligent insight and leadership.

Mug Shot

One of my favourite cups.

I suppose it's technically a mug, not a cup, but

Elephants on Orange

'Elephants on Orange': this post title sounds a lot like the title of a literary novel, doesn't it?

Some obscure and tangled metaphor or allegory, perhaps that is rich with symbolism and layers of meaning...
Or maybe some sort of edgy, acid-trippingly cutting commentary on today's society...

Alas (or perhaps fortunately, depending on where you stand), the title is nothing more than a literal description of this pretty little orange handbag from Japan.

The double elephant motif is very, very sweet.

Just gorgeous!! These bells on the catch means that the bag jingles cheefully too.

Bracelet vs Anklet

I've finally started my other, more writing-focused blog, Dodo Au Go-Go.

In my first post, 'The Dodo has Landed', I described the Dodo as wearing a silver bracelet around one ankle.

November Theme: Objets Trouvés

The first of the month and it's time for a new theme!

Quick reflection: I chose to start this blog with what I thought was an easy theme of spring. But it wasn't as easy as I thought, even though I thought I had a good selection of 'pictures that I'd prepared earlier'.

So with this realisation spring-fresh in mind, I decided to
