Blaze of Blue IV: Everywhere you look

This is the same ridge which, three evenings ago was waterbombed in convoy, and two nights ago had fire flare along the crest, with embers sailing down into our basin and starting spotfires.

Beyond the ridge, the smoke continues to bulge upwards, smearing the already brown skies with fresh bruises of grey.

This sky had been clear in the morning, and the air had been mercifully fresh.

And further around, where the sky had been clear, it begins to smear - courtesy of a separate bit of this very big fire. The two screens of smoke join quickly.

The juxtaposition between destruction and safety is unsettling. The sun will soon be tinted apocalyptic orange again.

Helicopters are humming ceaselessly at the moment, and several emergency vehicles have raced by today with sirens going.

In the face of worsening weather conditions, the RFS is speaking of the entire Blue Mountains area being under potential threat.

We need rain.

Badly.
